The Art of a Beautiful Morning
How we begin the morning has a way of setting the tone for everything that follows.
Before the emails, errands, meetings, notifications and endless to do lists begin, there is a small window of time that belongs entirely to you. And how you choose to spend those first moments can make a big beautiful difference to the energy you carry throughout the day.
A beautiful morning routine isn't about waking up at 5 a.m., drinking a green juice or completing a ten step wellness routine before sunrise.
It's much simpler than that.
It's about creating a beginning to your day that feels intentional rather than rushed. A few small rituals that help you feel grounded, present and ready to meet the day.
I think another thing to remember is to start off small. This is where I’m at. Don’t create an morning routine you simply can’t (at least for now) take on.
For me, I don’t look at my phone. I rinse my face (cool water in the morning feels so refreshing to me) and then I put on a bit of face cream. I make my bed and put away any clothes laying around from the night before. This really doesn’t take more then 10 minutes but it starts my day off in a way that makes me feel good.
Don't Rush the Beginning
There is something about waking up and immediately reaching for your phone that can make the day feel like it has already started without you.
Before you've even left your bed, you're absorbing emails, headlines, messages and other people's thoughts.
Instead, give yourself a little space.
Open the curtains. Let the light in. Make the bed. Drink a glass of water. Take a few deep breaths. Let yourself wake up before you ask your mind to start performing.
You don't need an hour of uninterrupted quiet. Even ten intentional minutes can change the feeling of a morning.
The goal isn't to do more. It's to begin more gently….calmly…beautifully.
Make the Ordinary Beautiful
One of the simplest ways to transform a morning is to pay attention to the details.
Drink your coffee from a cup you love (I always do this!) Put your breakfast on a beautiful plate. Light a candle while you get ready. Play music that makes you feel good. Keep your favorite perfume somewhere you'll see it.
These things might sound small - and they are. That's exactly why they matter.
We spend so much of our lives doing ordinary things. Why not make some of those ordinary moments beautiful?
A morning routine becomes a ritual when we stop rushing through it and start experiencing it.
Create Something to Look Forward To
A beautiful morning should contain something that is just for you.
Maybe it's ten minutes with a book. Maybe it's sitting by the window with your coffee. Maybe it's writing in a journal, going for a walk, stretching, listening to music or simply enjoying the quiet before the rest of the house wakes up. I understand this is hard if you have little kids but there is the time…..somewhere :)
It doesn't have to be productive.
In fact, perhaps it shouldn't be.
We are so accustomed to measuring our time by what we accomplish (I am horrible with this!!) that we forget the value of simply enjoying it.
Having one small pleasure built into your morning gives you something to look forward to - a little moment of calm before the day asks anything of you.
Give Your Mind Somewhere to Go
Mornings are also a beautiful time to create a little clarity.
Instead of immediately thinking about everything you need to accomplish, take a moment to decide how you want to feel.
Calm? Focused? Energized? Creative? Present?
Then consider what might support that feeling.
Writing down three priorities for the day can be more useful than creating an overwhelming list of twenty things. A few lines in a journal can clear your head. A handwritten to-do list can turn the noise in your mind into something tangible.
Sometimes creating a beautiful morning isn't about adding anything at all.
It's about creating space.
Let Your Environment Set the Tone
Your surroundings have an incredible influence on how you feel.
A bedroom with fresh sheets and an open window feels different from one filled with yesterday's clothes and clutter. A kitchen counter with a vase of flowers feels different from one covered in things waiting to be put away. A big one for me is making sure the dishes clean before going to bed. When I wake up to a dirty kitchen I already feel behind in my day.
This doesn't mean your home needs to be perfect.
It simply means that small acts of care can change the energy of a space.
Make the bed. Open the windows. Put things back where they belong. Bring in fresh flowers or a few branches from outside.
Create a home that feels good to wake up in.
There Is No Perfect Morning
Perhaps the most important part of creating a beautiful morning routine is remembering that it doesn't have to look a certain way.
Some mornings will be slow and peaceful.
Other mornings will be chaotic. You'll oversleep, spill your coffee, forget something and rush out the door.
That's life.
A beautiful routine isn't about achieving the perfect morning every single day. It's about having a few rituals you can return to whenever you can.
Maybe your full routine is an hour on a quiet Sunday morning. Maybe on a busy Tuesday, it's simply opening the curtains and making your bed.
Both count.
Start the Day by Choosing Yourself
A morning routine is ultimately less about what you do and more about how you choose to enter the day.
When you take a little time to care for yourself, your surroundings and your state of mind, you're sending yourself a quiet message:
I am worth taking care of. My day is worth experiencing. The little things matter.
And perhaps that's the real beauty of a morning routine.
It doesn't have to make you more productive.
It doesn't have to make you perfect.
It simply gives you a chance to begin again - intentionally, beautifully and on your own terms.
Don't save the beautiful moments for later. Start your day with them….and take that with you through your whole day.
